What is CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychological therapy based on the idea that it is not events themselves that cause intense emotions, but the way we interpret and make sense of them. Our thoughts about a situation influence how we feel emotionally and physically, and how we behave in response.
These behaviours can then feed back into our thoughts and emotions, creating a vicious cycle. At times, we can become stuck in patterns of worry, self-criticism, perfectionism, avoidance, reassurance-seeking, checking, or other coping strategies that provide short-term relief but unintentionally keep difficulties going in the longer term.
CBT helps us understand these patterns and test out new ways of responding. Together, we identify the thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and behaviours that may be maintaining your difficulties and develop practical strategies to help you move towards the life you want to live.
CBT has a strong evidence base for a range of difficulties, including OCD, anxiety disorders, and depression. It can also be helpful in addressing patterns such as low self-esteem, perfectionism, and self-criticism that may contribute to emotional distress. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to your individual goals and circumstances.
